Why your home’s square footage is not your roof size
Indoor living space and roof surface describe different parts of a property. Stories, attached sections and pitch can make two similarly sized homes very different roofing jobs.
One floor plan can sit beneath different roofs
A home listing measures indoor living space for a different purpose from a roofing measurement. A two-story home can stack two floors under one main roof footprint. A one-story home with the same living area can spread that space over a larger footprint. Neither listing number tells you all the roof planes.
Attached garages and porches add more roof surface without adding the same amount of listed living space. Roof pitch then changes the surface again: a sloped plane is longer than its horizontal projection. Dormers, hips and valleys add geometry that a single floor-area figure does not describe.
For a simple example, a 2,000-square-foot horizontal roof footprint at a uniform 6:12 pitch corresponds to about 2,236 square feet of sloped surface. That is a geometry example, not a measurement of a 2,000-square-foot home. The property could have different stories, additions and slopes.
What the calculator can show
The roof cost calculator lets you choose the area you actually know. A known roof surface is used directly. A horizontal footprint receives the selected pitch adjustment. Applying that adjustment again to a measured roof surface would count the slope twice.
If you do not know either area, the starting example still shows how size and pitch change a planning total. There is no need to turn indoor living space into a guessed measurement or climb onto the roof.
The calculator uses Tulsa metro planning rates for architectural asphalt. Commercial membranes, metal roofing and unusual replacement work need a separate budget.
Put the budget beside the actual roof
A measured roof connects the early budget to the actual project. The work then includes the existing layers, deck condition, flashing, ventilation and access, not just a multiplication of square footage. That is how the budget begins to describe the roof you have.
